Bridge pose (Setu Bandha Sarvangasana) symbolize a connection between two worlds - the man and the divine one, divided by the river of the life. Constructing the bridge could take long time, time of obstacles, testing our strength and ability to believe in ourselves, in the light, to keep going even when seems impossible and the thought of just giving up and walking back in the darkness so seducing. Eventually getting over all that and finishing our bridge will allowed us to do the transition of our ego-centered world to the one of our enlightened self (Atman), some call it 'the best version' of ourselves. In the symbolic world bridge is immortality, making the connection of our soul from one life to another.
Yoga gives all the tools and materials we need to construct Setu Bandha Sarvangasana, in the meaning of outside posture and inner process. There is all group of asanas called bridge-building tools to lead our body and mind to that point. To build firm and stable bridge requires knowledge and patience in the asana aspect and also in the mind one - to keep connected with our enlightened self is not always easy in this busy and materialistic world. Sometimes we make the connection and we have a strong feeling of it but sometimes for one or another reason we lose it and we have to build again our bridge to the point where is so firm that the river of the life full of its difficulties, worries and challenges it's not anymore able to destroy it. This bridge will allow us to explore and continue our journey, gives the freedom to be able to see what is on the other side and safely to bring us back if we want that, if we are not ready yet, if we need time to be able to be the best version of ourselves, to get rid of our complexes, fears, shadows. The bridge is symbol as well of the connection with the others, who of them are really important, who are the ones we want to take with us on the other side?!
Bridge posture (Setu Bandha Sarvangasana) :
- lie on your back with your knees bent and feet on the floor. Extend the arms along the floor, palms flat - press the feet and arms firmly into the floor. Exhale as you lift your hips toward the ceiling.
- roll your shoulders back and underneath your body. Clasp the hands and extend the arms along the floor beneath your pelvis. Straighten your arms as much as possible, pressing the forearms into the mat.
- keep your thighs and feet parallel.
- stay in the pose up to one minute, use variations depending on your level.
Asana challenge: till you are keeping the posture with normal breathing and during the relaxation after, think about:
What your bridge is made of, what are its qualities ?
Do you feel ready to cross, do you feel safe on it ?
Are you exited or afraid to go to the other side ?
Who you want to take with you ?
Enjoy and keep building !
