How many People practice Yoga in the World?

Yoga has many positive effects on our physical and mental health, from improving our posture and alleviating back pain to promoting mindfulness and reducing stress. Two billion people around the world practice yoga, fundamentally, “because it works” according to one leading guru from India.


Yoga is an ancient physical, mental and spiritual practice that originated in India and is now practiced in various forms around the world. More than 90 percent of people come to yoga

for flexibility, stress relief, health, and physical fitness. But, for most people, their primary reason for doing yoga will change. Yoga offers self-reflection, the practice of kindness and self-compassion, and continued growth and self-awareness. If in the sixties and seventies doing Sun salutation (Syria Namaskar) with the rising Sun, after toning energetically long Om, it was a symbol of the counterculture, now is increasingly popular discipline. It is practiced by people all over the world from different age, culture, religion, lifestyle, believes, status...any person can practice yoga in one or another form and live by its principals.


There currently exist a multitude of styles and philosophies associated with the practice of yoga that range from the energetic to the calm and meditative. The different schools of yoga each consist of specific attributes that may suit an individual according to their individual needs. India is holding the lead as country with the most practitioners and as the most popular yoga destination. The top one in Europe is Spain. The group of 30-49 year old are practicing yoga the most however the yoga growth statistics show it is growing in popularity with those over 50: 19% of yoga practitioners are 18 – 29 year old, 43% of yoga practitioners are 30 – 49 year old, 38% of yoga practitioners are 50+ year old.


Tao Porchon-Lynch, the Guinness-certified world's oldest yoga teacher, has died at age 101. The forever young yogi, author and competitive ballroom dancer, who inspired many through her classes and teachings. A lot of things come and go with changing fashions. But for the practice of yoga, nothing has significantly changed. In fact, it is becoming more popular, even with the fact that it is already more than 5,000 years since it was developed by the Indus-Sarasvati civilization in Northern India. The secret is simple - it works for everyone, in any level...just simply makes our life better and our perception diverse.
