Yoga Against Stress, Anxiety and Bad Mood

Yoga has a positive effect on key areas responsible for memory and information processing, as well emotional regulation, which helps reduce stress, anxiety and other negative emotional responses. Studies showed that improving our mood leads to better brain health and functioning (Physiology lab at the University of Illinois). Positive results of using yoga from patients with mood and anxiety disorders to manage their condition has been well documented. "In depressive disorders, yoga may be comparable to medication and the combination superior to medication alone." Yoga increases self-awareness, reduces stress, muscle tension and inflammation. It makes us more calm, relax, concentrate on the proper breathing, helps us to control our thoughts and slow down the mind. All these are key elements to reach an healthy lifestyle, where the depression and anxiety are out of the equation.

Finding a time to do meditation, would be among the most profitable 20-30 min of your day. Unfortunately many times is the first one to be cut down from the schedule of our busy days. Using a self-discipline and persistence on doing asana and meditation practice for curtain period of time will naturally make them inseparable part of our day.

Studies show that a lack of oxygenated-blood to the brain can affect our mood in a negative way, which in a long term could cause anxiety, even depression.

Yoga asanas to help us:


# Fish pose (Matsyasana) can help manage anxiety levels and reduce aches and pains that may be causing our bad mood.


# Headstand in general inversions help to maintain and lower blood pressure. High blood pressure contributes to mood disorders like anxiety and depression.


# Tree pose, in general balance asanas keep us aware of the breath, allowed to clear the mind by staying present and give us a challenge, dragging us out of the bad mood trap.
